Southern Silkies Photos and Information

It only takes one look at this chicken to see how it got its name. This soft, hairy-feathered fowl looks unlike most other poultry. The Silkie's feathers lack barbs which would otherwise hold the strands together, thus the individual strands sit free of each other and give the bird a soft and, well, silky appearance.

Both bearded and non-bearded Silkies have a feathery crest, like a powder puff, and a fleshy comb on top of the head. The cock's comb is much, much larger than the hens. However the comb doesn't look like what you might see on other types of fowl. A Silkie's comb  sometimes called a rose resembles a wart-like lump on the bird's forehead rather than the spiky appendage. Striking blue coloured lobes also adorn the ears. Silkies differ from other fowls in that they have dark bluish black flesh and five toes.

Meet baby Jack, our black partridge rooster.

Silkies lay a fair number of cream-colored eggs, but production can be interrupted due to their tendency to go broody: a hen will lay 100 eggs in an ideal year. In addition to being great mother and fathers, silkies are knowen for their calm and very friendly temperaments. They do well in small runs and interact well with people and children. They make a wonderful pet.

How to properly ship eggs

Place a small amount of wood shavings in the bottom of each egg cup. Put an egg in each cup and nestle it into the wood shavings.  Then place more shavings on top of the eggs and close the carton. The eggs should fit snuggly in the carton.
With packing tape wrap the carton to secure it. Then wrap the carton in a few layers of bubble wrap.

Fill a shipping box half way with News paper and place your carton inside. Then continue packing the box with newspaper. Making sure to pack all areas snuggly, including sides and fill to top. Your box should be flled with the News paper tightly, Slightly bulging.
Make sure to use plenty of tape , place your address label on and say a little prayer, for safe arrivel.

The USPS provides Priority boxes that are perfect for shipping carton of eggs.  Ship only as weather permits and as close to the first of the week as possible.
You should always let shipped eggs rest at room temp for 8 to 24 hours before you incubate them.

Happy Hatching!

Goldie & Miss Breanna

Mille Fleurs are the most popular of the d'Uccles. They are a multi-colored variety with many feathers. The feathers are a rich bright reddish gold, with each feather having a greenish black stripe and tipped with a diamond shaped white spangle. Their tail, leg, and toe plumage is black with each feather tipped with white. Heavy leg feathering, and a wide-set tail make them unique and unsurpassed in beauty. Their coloring will get richer with age. Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam Chicken - Hen weight-approx. 1.3 lbs. True bantam, meaning there is no standard-sized form. First bred in Uccle (Belgium) in 1900. Black Breasted Red Pheonix Pair

The Pheonix or also knowen as the Onagadori.

The ONAGADORI means, roughly translated "Honourable Fowl" and is a phenonema of animal breeding. A combination of genes, but one in particular called "nm", causes the extravagantly long growth of the tail feathers. An Onagadori's key trademark is the non-molting tail feathers that, if kept in the best of conditions with high levels of animal husbandry, grow for the life of the roosters. A portion of the tail does partially molt their sickle feathers each year, although individual feathers may be shed only every second or third year. The hens molt normally, as do the feathers that cover the other parts of the body: head, breast and back.  Colours are Black Breasted Red, Black Breasted Silver, Goishi (a pale Black Breasted Golden) and White.
